Eyes set in the right position alleviates pain caused from looking in the wrong direction.
I finish upper body workouts with an exercise called “cable face pulls” – which now that I write it sounds pretty painful…have no fear, my face is not pulled by a cable.
Would definitely have no part in that.
But, it’s a great way to finish shoulder and back workouts.
Let me break it down.
You stand in front of a cable fixed with a v-shape rope positioned at eye level.
Grabbing each side of the rope, you pull it towards your face and hold for two seconds.
Repeat this one rep 30 times.
This movement engages the back, shoulder, neck, and scapula (aka shoulder blades).
Today after hitting rep eight, I noticed pain in my neck.
It was a familiar pain felt many times before while performing this exercise.
Tired of feeling this way, I tried lowering the weight.
Nope, lower neck pain still there.
I tried holding the pose for less time.
Nope, lower neck pain still there.
What could be causing this pain and why did it continue?
I tried holding my neck and back straighter.
Nope, lower neck pain still there.
Finally, I fixed my eyes 3 feet higher above the rope (previously I stared 1 foot below the rope).
Next rep, no pain.
Two reps later, no pain.
Three reps later, no pain.
10 reps later, no pain.
I simply fixed what I was looking at and the pain went away.
Sometimes we focus on all things to alleviate our pain when all we need to do is reset what we’re focused on.
I ask you today, what pain are you experiencing?
Are you experiencing pain at work?
Are you like 52.3% of Americans (according to a report by the NY-based nonprofit group – Conference Board) who are unhappy at work?
You wake up dreading work everyday?
To school?
Or even worse, as you travel home?
I encourage you to find a new focus point because maybe your blessing is in your job and maybe you’re missing by focusing on the wrong things.
Maybe the pain relief comes from you and not from others – the ones who you’re blaming or focused on.
Or just maybe, when you raise your eyes up a little like I did while exercising, you stop staring downwards and begin moving effortlessly in rhythm with life.
Pick your head up, adjust your focus, and move towards a harmonious stride.
You can do this but you have to make the decision to change.
I can’t do this for you.
You can’t do this for me.
It’s time to live a fulfilled life and do the work we’re meant to do.
